The Nayak rule brought peace to the Tamil land, which was
till then torn with strife because of Islamic aggression and the internal
fight for succession within the Pandya Dynasty. The Nayak Rulers developed a
well-structured system of rule. The king was assisted in his duties by
Dalawai, (Chief Minister & Chief of Army) Pradhani, (Finance Minister) and
Rayasam (Chief Secretary). The Kingdom was divided into 72 zones, and each
zone was ruled by a 'Palayakar' (Chieftain), loyal to the Nayak king. At the
Village level, the 'Ayakar' Administration was established. The tax
collector was known as 'Ambalakarar' (among others). The tax collected by
them was handed over to the District Officers, who in turn remitted it to
the 'Pradhani'. |
