The tradition of Tamil Literature on private life has it that each verse should be in the form of an utterance by one of the dramatis personae involved - such as the Lover (தலைவன்), or his Sweetheart (தலைவி), or the confidant of the Sweetheart (தோழி). Following the same convention, the couplets in the காமத்துப்பால் happen to be utterances of any of these three characters.
