Tamilnadu during the 17th to 20th Centuries
(The British rule and the Independence)

    This lesson shows how the Britishers who came as traders conquered the country after Vijayanagar Empire. Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkatta were purchased by the Britishers to establish their storehouses. The French trading group made புதுச்சேரி their Commercial Centre. The Britishers stifled the French and waged wars against Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan . There is also a mention about Maharashtra kings ruling over தஞ்சாவூர். பாளையக்காரர்’s administration, freedom fighters like புலித்தேவன், வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மன் and மருதுபாண்டியர் are also noted in this lesson. The British administration is also described.

    Of the four units in this lesson, the first one deals with the British Administration and Colonial development. The Britishers joined with Arcot Nawabs for administering the country.

    The second unit discusses Marattas in Tamil land. பாளையப்பட்டுகள் were established by them. The பாளையப்பட்டு administration is also described .

    In the third unit you will learn about freedom wars and fighters. புலித்தேவன், கட்டபொம்மன் and மருதுபாண்டியர் and their role are considered in this unit.

    The fourth unit describes the role of the British in nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The British trading company became rulers and colonisers establishing the British Empire. State legislatures were established. Justice Party and Congress Party were dominant political Organisations in Tamilnadu aligning with and opposing the British respectively.

    The rules formulated in England became the laws of this land. At last in 1947 India became free from the British rule.

    This lesson is thus the history of Tamils from early days to the modern times as part of the national development of India.
