The
term 'Renunciation' has always had a religious connotation. It was
traditionally taken as an act incompatible with the worldly life.
The term was taken for granted to mean opting out of one's family
bindings and taking refuge in the uninhabited forests in pursuit
of the supreme 'bliss'! But Valluvar's exposition of renunciation
is totally different. He advocates the practice of renunciation
as a way of life well within one's family ambience. His views must
have been revolutionary and reformative in his own days. They hold
greater relevance today in the context of the disturbing pervasion
of materialism. Go ahead with this lesson for an understanding of
Valluvar's concept of an 'earthly sainthood'!
