In August 1947, the British quited India leaving her to be ruled by a democratic Government of her own. India underwent a great social, industrial and cultural change during the British occupation. Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet stands out as a shining example of this intermingling of two great cultures. He “represented the true wisdom and cosmic thinking of ancient India mated to the dynamic energy and progressive spirit of the past-Socratic-Kantian Western World.”30

During the British rule in India, foreign Missionaries were able to continue their work, unhampered and unharassed. Now, they had the full support and encouragement of the rulers.
