Aciriya-nikaṇṭu was the work of Ᾱṇṭi-p-Pulavar and perhaps this was written towards the close of the 17th century. Only the first two sections of this work have been printed.

Another work in the same metre as the above (Aciriyaviruttam) was Potikai-nikaṇṭu. The author was Swaminātha Kavirāyar. This work could be dated to the second half of the 18th century. Many words commonly used in and around Tirunelvely district are found in it.

Gopālaswāmi Nāicker wrote Apitāṉa-t-taṉi-ceyyuḷ-nikaṇṭu. The first part of this work was alone printed in 1878 during the life of the author.

Subramaṇia Desikar wrote Kantacuvāmiyam using the cuttira style. He set forward 24 ways of making nikaṇtu and endeavoured to follow them. These principles are called Kaṭṭalai.The first two sections were published by the author in 1844.

The unpublished work Kailāca-nikaṇṭu-cuḷāmaṇi tried to use fresh forms of classification.

Another work trying to accomplish new ways of classification is by the author Subramaṇya Kavirāyar. His work is called Nāmatipa-nikaṇṭu. In this work the grammatical classification into Uyar-tiṇai and Aḵṟiṇai are attempted and a chapter on qualities is included in the end.

Poruṭṭokai-nikaṇṭu is a work by one Subramaṇia Bhārathi. We have no knowledge of its date. It was published by the “Madura Tamli Sangam.”

During the slow course of development it became necessary to treat “homonyms” separately which slowly ended in the adoption of the alphabetical order. Of the works which dealt only with homonyms the earliest is Arumporuḷ Viḷakka-nikaṇtu, by Arumarundaiya. The work can be dated as 1763 A. D. It is an improvement on the others.

The other important work of this kind is Vēdakiriyār-nikaṇṭu by Vedagiri Mudaliār. It was published in 1842 A. D. by the Jaffna Society.
