22. REV. B. SCHULTZE

B. Schultze was born in 1689 at Sonnenburg in Brandenburg. He studied at Halle and set out directly from Halle via Holland and England and embarked at Deal on 20th of March, 1719 and landed at Madras on 25th July, 1719 and was ordained at Tranquebar in 1720. He began the Madras Mission in 1728 and went home in 1743. He died at Halle on 25th of November, 1760.

23. REV. LEVI SPAULDING

Spaulding was born on August 22nd, 1791, in the United States of America. He graduated in 1818, from the Dartsmouth College and from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1818. A year later, in 1819, he sailed for Ceylon reaching the island in 1820. He stayed in Manepy for several years. In 1833, he went to Uduvil with his wife to take charge of a girls’ boarding school which was under their care for nearly forty years. At Uduvil he performed his duties with characteristic orderliness. Spaulding belonged to the London Mission Society.

In 1844, he visited the United States and returned in 1846 to Ceylon.

Spaulding is supposed to have written nearly twenty books in Tamil on Christianity. Many Tamil lyrics also came from his pen. He translated into Tamil a book Mōṭcappirayāṇam.

On June 8th of 1874, he died at Uduvil. Generous by nature, Spaulding was loved by all and many Hindus also mourned his death. Almost a year later, Mrs. Spaulding died.

24. H. STOKES

H. Stokes joined the Madras Civil Service in 1826 but arrived in India, only on the 9th of January, 1827. He became a district Collector on 1-7-1842. He translated into English Kumara
