In the many letters he wrote to Swaminatha Iyer, Vinson wrote a number of poems. For example:

27. REV. MIRON WINSLOW

Winslow was born in the United States of America on 11th December, 1789. Having acquired a good English education, at the age of twenty one, he engaged in mercantile pursuits at Norwich. Two years later, he was so deeply impressed with the importance of foreign missions, that he consented to work as a missionary. He studied at Middlebury College, then pursued special studies in languages at Yale and graduated from the Andover Theological Seminary. For six months he preached and raised large sums of money for missionary work. He displayed that rare combination of intellectual, business and religious gifts which so distinguished his subsequent career. He was ordained in 1818.

Winslow sailed for India with his wife in 1819. He remained at Uduvil till 1833, conducting a boarding and day school. His wife died in 1833 leaving three small girls. In October 1833, he sailed for America with his children. His missionary addresses here created a wide and deep interest in India. He returned with the second Mrs. Winslow in 1836 to Ceylon. After a short stay there, he came to Madras and resided at Rayapuram. He died in October 22, 1864.

Between 1823 and 1840, he printed many small pamphlets in Tamil. His famous dictionary was compiled in 1862. Like his other counterparts and contemporaries he studied Tamil with the aid of native scholars.

At Madras he supervised the mission school and printing press.
