இரும்புங் கண்டுபிடிக்குமுன், கல்லிற்குப்பின், மரத்தையே தட்டுமுட்டுகட்கு மக்கள் பயன்படுத்தியிருத்தல் வேண்டும். கொல்தொழில் என்பது கொலை வினை. உயிருள்ள பொருளையே கொல்லுதல் கூடும். மரம் உயிருள்ளது. ஆதலால் தச்சர் மரக்கொல்லர் எனப்பட்டனர். "மரங்கொஃ றச்சரும்" என்று சிலப்பதிகாரங் (5 : 29) கூறுதல் காண்க. கொல், கம்(கம்மியம்) என்பனபோல், தச்சு என்பது முதற்காலத்திற் கலையைக் (art) குறித்தது.

தச்சன் - Gk tekton (joiner, carpenter), Gk. tekhne(art) - Gk. tekhnikos-F. technic, E technic, technique, technical.
துள் - துர(துளை) - துற - துறப்பு - துறப்பணம் = துளையிடு கருவி (drill). துற - திற. துறப்பு - திறப்பு, துறவு - திறவு, துறப்பு = திறவுகோல். துறப்புக்குச்சு என்னும் வழக்கை நோக்குக.

Gk. trupao, to bore, trupa, hole - Gk. trupanon - L. trepanum - OF. trepan(er) - ME, E. trepan, borer, surgeon’s cylindrical saw. துறப்பணம் - Gk. trupanon. இங்ஙனம் தச்சுவேலைக் கருவிப்பெயரும் ஒத்திருத்தல் காண்க.

தீர்தல் = முடிதல். தீர்த்தல் = முடித்தல். தீர்மானம் = முடிவு, முடிபு, இசையில் தாளமுடிவு அல்லது மதங்கம் (மிருதங்கம்) போன்ற தோற் கருவித்தட்டு முடிப்பு. மானம் ஒரு தொழிற்பெயரீறு ஒ.நோ: சேர் - சேர்மானம். தீர்மானம் - தீர்மானி. தீர்மானித்தல் = முடிவு செய்தல், தாளந் தீர்த்தல்.
