Objectives
The objective of this
effort is to arrive at a common standard for Tamil glyph encoding
system for monolingual and bilingual applications.
This effort is to be
concluded before 20th of May,1999. After due consideration
of all feedback, the final encoding scheme will be made available
world-wide to all developers and users in the various platforms
(Windows, Mac and Unix) and for different applications.
Methodology
The draft encoding schemes
(TANSCII and TANSMONO) are made available for extensive access
and use. Developers and users are invited to convert their fonts
from existing codes to draft standard codes. The resulting font
may be designated:
TNMFontface Name - e.g.
TNMMaduram
TNBFontface Name - e.g.
TNBMaduram
Tools
The following shareware
tools are available for conversion to draft standards:
Softy - Windows shareware tool that can be
used for conversion of existing fonts to the new encoding
Kamban - Windows freeware tool that
has a text editor and fonts. Download this self extracting file
and execute it to install Kamban on your PC.
In addition, any other
tools may be used for conversion.
Migration Issues
Efforts are being made
to provide tools that can assist in migration. However, migration
to the new encoding should wait till the final standard is announced. |
