This lesson discusses words and their kinds, focussing on இடைச்சொல். On the basis of the Parts of Speech of English grammar, இடைச்சொல் can be placed under ‘Pre-position’. But இடைச்சொல் is not just a pre-position. So let us call it “preposition - like word unit” . We call it a word-unit for it does not denote anything by itself, but in conjunction with a noun or verb, it voices expressions, emotions and ideas. You will learn in this lesson the role of இடைச்சொல் in bringing out the meaning of a word.

Based on their structure, words can be called
பகுபதம் (divisible word), and பகாப்பதம் (indivisible word). பகுபதம் will have six parts called பகுதி (the head part), விகுதி (end part), இடைநிலை (middle part), சந்தி (connection), சாரியை (aligning part) and விகாரம் (change). பகுதி can be a noun, a verb, an adjective or a preposition-like word. இடைநிலை occurs between பகுதி and விகுதி. சந்தி (connection) is second in the order of these six parts in a word. சாரியை (aligning part) occurs before விகுதி, the end-part of a word. விகாரம் (change) refers to modifications in these parts when they combine into a word. A word will have the two parts of பகுதி (head part) and விகுதி (end part) and can have upto six parts as listed here.

சொல் is grammatically classified into பெயர் (noun), வினை (verb), இடை (preposition), and உரி (adjective). categorized into four classes called இயற்சொல், திரிசொல், திசைச்சொல் and வடசொல்.

The grammar and properties of இடைச்சொல் can be learnt from grammatical works of தொல்காப்பியம் and நன்னூல், இடைச்சொற்கள் have no special function other than highlighting the meaning of nouns and verbs.

நன்னூல் classifies இடைச்சொல் into (1) வேற்றுமை உருபுகள் (case markers), (2) வினை விகுதிகளும் (verbal endings), காலம் காட்டும் இடைநிலைகளும் (tense markers), (3) சாரியைகள் (aligned parts), (4) உவம உருபுகள் (comparison particles) , (5) meaning-explicit, single-letter words like ஏ and ஓ, (6) words adding sound quality in poems (இசைநிறை), (7) poetic mutables and (8) words indicative of fear and speed etc.
