Bharathi’s பாஞ்சாலி சபதம் is based on an episode in the epic Mahabharatha of Sage Vyasa. Bharathi uses this episode as a medium to draw the attention of the contemporary society to its slavery, its indifference, and the deplorable status of the womenfolk. It brings to focus the legitimate prerogatives of women in society in relation to men. Viewed from a different angle, Bharathi is a personification of Bharatha Matha, Mother India. From yet another perspective, it is believed that பாஞ்சாலி சபதம் represents Bharathi’s belief that every woman is a manifestation of ‘Shakthi’, the goddess.
