The Bhakthi Literature in Tamil can be categorised under three types: (i) hymns in praise of the divine (ii) songs of prayer seeking salvation from birth (iii) poems depicting the relationship between the divine and the human as the one between a lover and his sweet heart. Bharathi’s கண்ணன் பாட்டு may not fit into any of these traditional categories. Bharathi goes beyond them, viewing கண்ணன் not as a ‘being’ worthy of devotion and respect, but as a fellow-human, a helpful companian, and in ever so many forms - as his servant, his cowherd, his child, his sweet-heart, and whatnot. Bharathi’s vision of god begins with the immediate, to transcend gradually to the universal!
