Bharathi’s poem ‘வங்கமே வாழ்க!’ Marks Bharathi's entry into the Freedom stuggle of Inida. This Poem pay tributes to the rise of the nationalist spirit among the Bengali Hindus and the Muslims alike following the division of Bengal into the East and the West, Bharathi aligned himself initially with the radical group of freedom fighters led by Lokamanya Balagangadhara Tilakar. When Tilakar was arrested by the Britishers for writing ill of the British Government, Bharathi condemned his arrest. The British Government was obviously annoyed and abiding time to arrest Bharathi. Bharathi had to, therefore move into French occupied Indian territory to avoid arrest. However, ten years later, when he entered the British Indian territory he was caught and put behind bars. The radical Bharathi was later lured by Gandhi into nonviolent struggle. His attachment to Gandhi was so much, that he called him ‘The saviour of India’ and joined Gandhi’s movement of ‘non-cooperation’.
