This section projects the milieu, the social, political, economic background, in which the poet lived, so that his contributions may be viewed in proper perspective. The milieu is characterized by subjugation to foreign rule of an illiterate innocent mass of people driven by fear and superstitions. Bharathi emerged in this context as one daring to swim against the current. His life whether at Ettayapuram, or at Chennai, or at Pondichery or at Kadayam shows how he continued to fight against odds undeterred by failures and moments of disgrace. He refused to yield to the challenges of life. His fearlessness, his revolutionary ideals and activities in his own life-time marked him as a man out of the ordinary!
