Women-liberation
is a matter very close to the heart of Bharathidasan. He wanted
women to be freed from all restraints - particularly from the traditional
taboo on their free mingling with the community, and from the irrational
convention binding on their social behaviour, particularly the social
restrictions on widows. He paved the way for women to claim equal
rights and achieve parity with men. He advocated, and encouraged
remarriage of young widows, at a time when such an act was decried
as a sacrilege. When all traditions and conventions, were considered
sacrosanct, he exhorted the women to break their shackles and to
overthrow the restrictions imposed on them. Today we find women
in every walk of life arts, poetry, research, sports, security and
what not. The seeds for this progress were sown by people like Bharathidasan. |
