Bharathidasan strove for reformation in the lives of women. To reach this end, he expected all women to be formally educated. He wanted to see women freed from fears and ignorance. He wanted them to be bold and valiant. Queen Vijayarani of வீரத்தாய் and the அரசி of பாண்டியன் பரிசு are representative characters of Bharathidasan’s creation, to project his vision of valiant women. The woman characters of Bharathidasan are not dumb, docile and submissive as the women characters of traditional poetry used to be. They are vocal; they cannot sit idle when they see an injustice inflicted, nor will they stay dumb when they are charged with passions of love. They break all barriers of caste and religion, position and wealth when they seek a life-partner. Bharathidasan’s குடும்ப விளக்கு projects woman in a non-conventional light. Woman is exalted as the source of illumination for any home, with her education and intelligence and her ability to plan and to execute.
