When
Carnatic music became popular and on every stage in Tamilnadu, songs
written in languages other than Tamil were patronised, Bharathidasan
came down heavily on those patrons and promoters. He composed a
number of simple lyrics in Tamil for the musicians to set music
to and sing. His concern for social reform runs through all these
lyrics. Some of them address young children, others young women.
He has written lyrics on Tamil, its hoary tradition and culture.
He has also written a number of songs depicting the true love among
the ordinary people - the cartman, the mill-labour, the farmer,
the weaver, the foundry-worker, the flower-vendor, the postman and
others. We introduce you to some of these melodious works in this
lesson.
