Women
liberation, Bharathidasan believed, was a pre-requisite to the political
freedom of the country. And women liberation was not something to
gain from others; nay, it was to come from within, by extricating
themselves from their own ‘mind-set’. விஜயா, the protagonist of
his heroic poem ‘வீரத்தாய்’ and சுப்பம்மாள் of ‘தமிழச்சியின் கத்தி’
are exemplary women he quotes for the modern woman to emulate. Courage
and valour are essential for women to feel and stay free. Education
will help them in rearing children, promoting family, protecting
the community and safeguarding education itself, as he says in குடும்ப
