The history of Tamil Nadu is traced under three broad heads - the Early period, the Interim period and the Later period. Under the Early period we trace the history prior to 3rd Century B.C. This period covers the Harappa, Mohenjedora civilizations. The excavations at Harappa and Mohenjedora show many evidences of Dravidian and Tamil culture having flourished there. Tamil Nadu reached new heights of fame during the Chera, Chola and Pandya Emperors. We touch briefly on the fame and popularity of these dynasties as recorded by Megasthanis, Ptolemy and such other foreign visitors. After the 3rd Century A.D., Tamil Nadu was under the rule of some foreigners, called ‘Kalappirar’.. That was the dark period of Tamil history. The Pallavas became the rulers in 614c. A.D. and with them came the revival of art and culture. The revival reached its peak when the Cholas, came back to power in the 9th c. B.C. After the Cholas the Pandiyas became powerful in the South Tamil Nadu. The Bhakthi Movement became popular during this period. The later part of Tamil Nadu’s history is marked by the Nayak Rule and the advent of the Europeans. The British rule had its impact on Tamil Nadu as with the rest of India. The post - independence Tamil Nadu is registering a strident growth in every walk of life.
