| The qualities and the contributions expected of men, women and the respectable elders in the society in safeguarding and promoting the community were well-defined in the ancient Tamil society. Men were to seek their livelihood. Women were to be subservient but to be courageous and valiant, when occasion demanded and the elders were to see that the rulers never got astray from the path of virtue. |
