This lesson brings out the nature and charactertistics of Tamil translations in the film world. The changes in Tamil language caused by translatons are also described. Films and languages, Tamil remakes of films in other languages, linguistic structure of Tamil of the films and qualities of translations in films are discussed in four units of this lesson. Only translations can take a film to people of different languages breaking linguistic limits. From the silent movies of the beginning of the 20th century, films produced in America and Europe were screned in India. Filmogers were very much impressed with the moves on the screens, and looked at them with awe and pleasure. Later the ‘talkies’ attracted the Tamil people but they did not understand English. Translations enabled them to understand and enjoy such films. It was done by English-knowing persons, by appearing on the stage and explaining in Tamil, scene afer scene. Bilingual translations became rare and this facility disappeared in course of time. Producers used the technique of dubbing the film into another language for commercial purpose. At this stage the film lost the status of art and became a trade. Tamil dubbings of films produced in other languages like Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and English were successful in Tamil Nadu. Stunts, magic, and bhakthi films produced in Telegu were dubbed in Tamil. Grand Hollywood films are also dubbed in Tamil. Cognate languages like Malayalam and Telugu do not get affected in Tamil translations, as much as the other languages, foreign or Indian. Film translations create new Tamil word sequences, word formations and linguistic changes. Thus, Tamil undergoes new changes to make it more and more modern. Further, translation creates new trends in the quality and the idealism of the Tamil films. On learning this lesson you will appreciate the structural and semantic changes occurring in Tamil. Cultural, Social and Political factors of films of other languages tend to change the form and functions of language elements of Tamil. The role of dubbing brings in grammatical changes in Tamil. This can also be understood from the lesson.
