India’s
First Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was a multifaceted genius admired
for his ‘myriad-mindedness’. Among his expansive and impressive body of
work, Gitanjali is Tagore’s beautiful English translation of his own poems
with an introduction by W.B. Yeats. It is widely regarded as one of his
greatest achievements that has stirred the imagination of many, across
national boundaries down the ages.
As the chancellor of Visva Bharati, which
was founded by Gurudev Tagore, it gives me immense pleasure to learn that
the very first facsimile edition of this perennial bestseller is being
published by Visva-Bharati, in collaboration with UBS Publisher’s Distributors.
This never-before edition of Gitanjali has been planned to interest the
uninitiated reader as well as the serious reader of Tagore alike.
I welcome this endeavour and wish the book
all success.
