LESSON - 6
p10246 Television Plays
This lesson tells you all about the history of television
plays, their individuality, their production and other
characteristic features.
Television plays are popular all over the world. Their
growth has been so spectacular, that they take up half the
total number of TV programmes. In fact, television plays
are as good as movies. Only the size of the screen is
different. That is why TV is called the small screen. A
study of Tamil drama would be incomplete without a
knowledge of the characteristics of TV plays, how they
differ from other electronic media, and their manner of
production etc.
In India, television was introduced in 1926. In 1959,
telecasting began with aid from UNESCO. Initiallly, television
was meant for promoting agriculture and education. Indian TV
was part of All India Raido and available only in Delhi and its
surroundings.
In 1976, editing facilities became available, and in 1982,
because of the Asian Games, colour television was introduced.
Dubbing was also made possible. Thus, television spread its
reach to include all kinds of programmes. The establishment
of relay stations and towers made television programmes
accessible to viewers even in remote villages. Manufacturers
saw the great advantages of taking their products to the
maximum number of people by means of television. This
resulted in the commercialization of Television. Unlike movies,
stage plays and street plays, TV plays reached the people
right in their homes. This enables the artistes to have a
greater rapport with the viewers.
With the advent of private TV channels, mega-serials
have become very popular. Most of them are women-oriented.
As children also watch television programmes, plays and
serials based on fantasy, are produced exclusively for
children. Television today, has become almost a member of
the family. Hence, its impact on society is incredible. If it is
used for constructive purposes, it can have long-lasting
benefits for society.
This lesson teaches you all about television plays, their
origin, growth, importance and their future impact on society.
