Coastal life and its vicinity form the settings for a number of poems in the sangam literature. The poet Ammoovanaar has composed 100 poems in Ayinkirunooru, Naltanthuvanaar has done all the 33 poems of Neithalkali in Kalithokai.

As the hero would have gone to deep seas for fishing, the heroine feels for his sufferings in sun, rain and wind Delay in the hero's return makes her sorrowful.
