The lesson deals
with the people and their behaviour living on seashore and its neighboured
called Neithal Thinai. The basic, core and special subject of this
landscape are also presented. Special lifestyles relevant to this
environment are described Literary aspects and facts are brought
out through appropriate illustration.
Coastal life and its vicinity form the settings for a number of
poems in the sangam literature. The poet Ammoovanaar has composed
100 poems in Ayinkirunooru, Naltanthuvanaar has done all the 33
poems of Neithalkali in Kalithokai.
The basic subjects of land and time are coastal neighbourhood and
all the six seasons of the year besides dusk called Erpaadu. The
core subjects like God., people. animals, plants and work are the
following: the rain-god called Varunan, different groups of people
like Duraivan, Cherppan, Parathavar, Nullayar and Alavar, birds
like sea crow and swan, animals such as whale and crocodile, living

being obtained by selling fish and salt, drum called Meenkotparai,
musical rhythm being Chevazhippan, lyre being Vilariyaazh and jobs
being fishing and selling salt. The special subjects are sympathising
and actions related to this mood. As the hero would have gone to
deep seas for fishing, the heroine feels for his sufferings in sun,
rain and wind Delay in the hero's return makes her sorrowful.
On learning this lesson you will be able to appreciate the reflection
of Tamil life in all its subtle aspects in Sangam literature with
