And Edmund Burke referred to journalists as a necessary fourth pillar in parliamentary proceedings. Newspaper and journals act as watchdogs of democracy. The press is referred to as the Guardian Angel of Democracy. The highlight of a newspaper is its ability to broadcast and convey daily news to the common man. News is depicted in various forms such as illustrations, cartoons, Question Answers and Special Articles. Journals not only carry daily news but also carry discussions on the day’s news. In a democracy, journals and newspapers play an important role in reflecting and creating a view among the people. Journals played an important role during the Indian Freedom Struggle. Chittranjan Das and Subhash Chandra Bose jointly published the journal “Forward”. Aravindar published the journal ‘யுகாந்தர் ; Mahatma Gandhi published “யங் இந்தியா” and “ஹரிஜன்”. Freedom Fighters used journals to voice their views to the people of the nation during the freedom struggle. Journals are also responsible for creating social awareness among people in a society. Because of this, leaders like Hitler Napoleon had banned journals during their reign. Former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill made use of journals for cementing his victory. Community Education is also possible through the means of journals. Journals also act as a responsible & constructive opposition to the Government in a democracy. Journals bring out the mistakes committed by the government. An example for this is the famous Watergate Scandal in the United States, which was published by the “Washington Post”.
