his native place, he prepared a tract of nearly three pages (800) on “Hints for English Beginners in Tamil.”¹⁸

Nearly 4,500 pages of printed matter was the result of Dr. Green's work.

Dr. Vaitilingam said that the copies of the book on obstetrics which was studied by several educated women were all sold out and the copies of “Vade Mecum” (Anatomy, Surgery and Physics) were also successfully sold that it was necessary to revise and print them again.¹⁹

13. REV. J. E. GRUNDLER

J.E. Grundler was born at Weissensee on the 7th of April, 1677. He studied at Helle and was ordained at Copenhagen in 1708. He embarked from there on the 17th of November, 1708 and landed at Tranquebar on 20th July, 1709. He married in 1716 and died on 19th march 1720 and was buried the next day in New Jerusalem Church.

He has written a treatise on “The Malabarian Medicus.”

14. REV. H. R. HOISINGTON

Hoisington was born on 23rd August 1801 in the United States of America. When only fifteen years old, he learned the printers trade in Buffalo and pursued it in New York. He studied under Dr. Armstrong at Bloomfield Academy, and graduated in 1828 from Williams College and from the Auburn Theological Seminary in 1831. In the same year, he was ordained. Two years later, in 1833 he set sail for Ceylon as a missionary. Hoisington was with the Batticotta Seminary for nearly ten years.

In 1834, Todd and Hoisington were deputed to Madura in South India - establish a new mission there. Two years later
