This lesson discusses poems 184, 188, 189, 191, 192, 214, 278 and 312 from the Puranaanooru. The poems in the Puranaanooru speak of universal truths. They offer valuable advice on various aspects of life. The Puranaanooru is rightly regarded as the storehouse of ancient Tamil wisdom.

Poem 184 is written by Pisiranthaiyar. This poem reflects the power and influence enjoyed by ancient Tamil poets. In those days poets were held in high esteem. They were fearless and had the courage to even reprimand a king, whenever he went wrong.

The ancient Tamil Kings were also great scholars. Some of them were also renowned poets. Poem 188 is written by the Pandya king Arivudai Nambi. This poem celebrates the joys of parenthood. One may have enough wealth to dine with the whole world but it can never match the pleasure of watching one’s little children eat. Thus the poem underlines the fact that children are a source of unalloyed joy.

Poem 189 by Nakkeeran speaks of a great truth. According to the poet wealth is a source of joy only when it is shared.

Poem 191 sung by Pisiranthaiyar enumerates the prerequisites for a peaceful life. A man who is blessed with a virtuous wife, wise and obedient children, a just king and the company of learned men is the happiest.

Poem 192 emphasizes a truth that is central to Hindu philosophy. This poem is written by Kanian Poongundranar. The poet stresses the fact that we reap what we sow. The joys and sorrows of our lives are of our own making.

Poem 214 is written by the Chozha king, Kopperumchozhan. The poem expounds the need for having high aspirations in life.

Written by Nachellai, also known as Kakkai Padiniyar, Poem 278 glorifies courage in battlefield. It is cowardly to run away from the battlefield. The poem exalts the ancient Tamil mothers who would rather see their sons die valiantly in the battlefield than run away to save their lives.

Poem 312 written by Ponmudiar enunciates the duties that are to be fulfilled by a mother, a father, a son and a king.
