The last of the three early composers or ஆதி மும்மூர்த்திகள் is மாரிமுத்தாப்பிள்ளை. The section on him begins with a rendering of his well-known composition, "காலைத் தூக்கி நின்றாடும் தெய்வமே" in praise of Lord Nataraja. A contemporary of கவிராயர், மாரிமுத்தாப்பிள்ளை wrote devotional songs from an unusual spiritual perspectives. Endowed with a natural flair for music and rigorous training , he could effortlessly compose கீர்த்தனை rich in meaning and melody. As with the other great composers , Marimuthapillai’s life was witness to extraordinary events. His composition, the புலியூர் வெண்பா, led to the restoration of his son’s lost memory.

Marimuthapillai’s musical creations were prodigious . However as with the other early masters, only 25 of Marimuthapillai’s keerthanais are available today. A list of his well-known works is given in this section.

An unusual feature of Marimuthapillai’s devotional compositions is his glorification of the Lord through a seemingly accusatory and critical view. The example provided in the lesson is a கீர்த்தனை where the omnipotence of Lord Siva is conveyed by criticizing his dance posture as Lord Nataraja with one foot planted on the ground and the other raised. This unusual style of glorification has given the name வஞ்சப் புகழ்ச்சிக் கீர்த்தனைகள் or ஏசல் கீர்த்தனைகள் to Marimuthapillai’s songs.

Marimuthapillai’s keerthanais are rendered in music and dance concerts today. The most famous of his கீர்த்தனைகள் are listed.
