Lesson 3
P20133 Types of Neologisms (Solaakkam)
This lesson discusses
the various types of
solaakkam. There are several approaches
to the
process of solaakkam. The lesson analyses
9
commonly practiced methods of solaakkam. They are
Kootaakkam, Munnotaakkam, Pinottaakkam,
Maatram
Pin Vadivaakkam, Kathirippaakkam, Kalappakkam,
Thalaipezhuthaakkam and Sol Uruvaakkam.
In traditional Tamil grammar Kootaakkam
is called
Thogaiaakkam.Kootakkam is the method in which
new
words are created by combining various parts of
speech such as noun i.e., (peyargal) ,verbs i.e.,(vinaigal),
adjectives i.e., (peyaradaigal) and adverbs i.e.,vinayadikal
(adverbs). New words can be created by combining 2
nouns, combining a verb with a noun, combining a noun
with a verb, combining an adjective with a noun,
combining a verb with a verb and so on.
Munnotaakkam is the creation of a new
word by
attaching a prefix to an already existing word.
Pinnotaakkam is the creation of a new word by
attaching a suffix to an existing word or through
inflections. In Tamil, Pinnotaakkam is the most widely
practiced method of solaakkam. Maatram is
the
method in which a word belonging to a particular part
of speech or class is used as a different part of
speech without any change in its form. For example, a
word that functions as a noun may be also used as a
verb in a different context without any change in its
form. Pin vadivaakkam or Pinaakkam is the technique
of creating new words by deriving a verb from a noun.
This technique is not used very often in Tamil.
Kathiripaakkam is the creation of new words by
abbreviating existing words. This technique is largely
used to simplify complex words. Kalappakkam is a
method of solaakkam where parts of 2 existing words
are combined to coin a new word. This technique is
very rarely used in Tamil solaakkam. Creating new
words by forming acronyms is called
Thalaippezhuthaakkam. Tamil has a number of English
acronyms. Sol uruvaakkam is the process of creating
an entirely new word in a language.
