book has not been mentioned by Dr. R. P. Sethu Pillai in his chronological list of Dr. Caldwell’s work.

While searching in the Connemara and Madras University Libraries, I was able to unearth from the “Asiatic Researches: Or Transactions Of The Society Instituted In Bengal For Enquiry In To The History And Antiquities, The Arts, Sciences And Literature Of Asia”, Dr. John’s translations of Avvaiyār. The many printed papers of Dr.Pope were also available here. Dr.Caldwell’s son Robert Charles Caldwell has written two essays on “Tamil popular Poetry” in the “Indian Antiquary”. These are also found. These works had to be sought, studied and noted in the library premises itself. Books could not be removed and I had to spend much time with them inside the library.

At “Maraimalai Aṭikaḷ Library” Madras, much good has been done by preserving for posterity some very valuable books of these European scholars. Some of Dr.Green’s works are present; so also is the copy of Nālaṭiyār which Dr.Pope used. Dictionaries of Fabricious, Rottler and first edition of Beschi’s Caturakarāti are also there. These rare books cannot be removed from the library for study and hence here too, I had to spend much time studying them.

The Presidency College Library- considered to be older than that of the Madras University-had certain rare books like Gover’s “The Folk-Songs Of Southern India” to provide. The Coimbatore Government Arts College Library had the dictionary of spaulding (3rd edition printed by Higginbothams, Madras) and the first edition of the “Sacred Kuraḷ” by Pope in which the Preface remains in tact while in later Saiva Siddhanta Kaḷagham editions it was omitted in pieces. The comparative notes of Dr.Pope are also excluded. These, I need not mention, are very essential for a student research. Since some successive editions had certain alterations to make, an endeavour to trace some of these editions became a necessity. In the search of these editions, I invariably met many Tamil scholars of whom special mention must be made of Mr.C.M.Ramachandra Chettiar, B.A.B.L.
