6 | The Contribution of European Scholars |
Rev. Dr. Father M. Ambrose4 and Rev. Father C. K. Swamy5 obliged me by translating passage from Latin and French into English. In a general study like this it is not possible to go into the details of every contribution I have no doubt attempted to treat the major works in a detailed fashion though it is impossible to treat exhaustively each and every one of them. About progress made after the 19th century. I have not mentioned unless it was very essential. It was also not possible to include minor works which had a temporary existence. Dr. John Murdoch has classified them well in his catalogue. About 500 works on Christianity itself are enumerated and to discuss their contributions is well nigh impossible. I restricted my study as far as possible to those to who left a perpetual stamp on Tamil literature with an exception here and there.
