Welcome to the Beginners Programme leading to the Award of Certificate in Tamil Language.
The objective of the basic course is to introduce the spoken and the written forms of Tamil Alphabets. To help you realize the spoken form, a system of roman phonetic transcription is used throughout this course. A key to this system can be accessed by clicking on this link.
To help you navigate through the course easily, a number of links are provided. The visible captions on these links are mostly in Tamil. But when you mouse over them, their English equivalent will appear.

Hey! you want to see Table
This takes you to the Table of Tamil Alphabets. All the 247 Tamil letters are tabulated here.
You can hear the letters pronounced, by moving the cursor to any letter in the Table and clicking on it.
A click on this rectangle pops up a list of lessons; when you move the cursor on these lessons, a set of links appear in a box adjoining the list of lessons. The set of links will consist of 2 or more of the following:

Lesson 15 presents a list of 16 songs, each of which can be accessed directly from here.
Lessons
When you move your cursor on this link, you will see a set of sub-sections of the lesson.
You can access the opening page of any of these sub-sections, by moving the cursor to them and clicking on them.

Test
When your cursor moves on this link, a set of serial numbers will appear. Click to go to the respective test of your choice.
These tests, otherwise appear in their normal course on their own, as you work through the pages of the lessons.
Reading
This link takes you to a few exercises on reading in each lesson. You need to activate the page when it appears on the screen, by clicking on ªî£ìè¢èñ¢ / Start.
When the fourth word on a given page is read out, a small green triangle will appear on top-right corner. Click on this triangle to continue.
Communication skills
Under Communication Skills, a few interactive exercises are given in each lesson. A click on this link takes you directly to those exercises in the chosen lesson. Activate the page when it appears on the screen by clicking on ªî£ìè¢èñ¢ / Start and follow the instructions given thereon.
Writing
Click on this link to practise on writing. Each lesson has a provision for such practice. There are two options:
i) Click on the PRINT option, to get a hard copy of the worksheet and practise on it.
ii) Click on the
right arrow, to get
a work space on the screen where
you can practise tracing the letter
with the mouse.
You can pick up a colour by clicking on it from the column of coloured circles; trace the letter on the black rectangle with the left button on the mouse kept pressed.
The same right arrow can be pressed again to move on to the next letter / word to practise.
iii) Click on the
left arrow, if you
want to practise the previous
exercise again.
