Child-marriage, the restraints imposed on widows, the exploitation in the name of dowry, the 'wed-locking'of incompatible pairs - were rampant social evils in the days of Bharathi. The poet's anger at these evils gets a persuasive expression in his poems and prose articles. At a time when only the Woman's loyalty to her husband was insisted, he daringly declared 'loyalty'as an attribute to be expected of a man to his wife as much as of a woman to her husband. Faith in humanism and humanitarian values was at the core of his thoughts on social reformation.
