At Kadayam, life was miserable for Bhrathi. The local people could not put up
with the radical thinking and reformative activities of Bharathi. They put up
stiff resistance. Bharathi was in need of financial support too. He expected
help from the Ettayapuram Chieftain. But the help did not come forth. Then he
had plans to publish his works. No help came from expected sources for that too.
Yet he did not
lose his heart. He maintained his dignity amidst poverty, disgrace and
disappointments. He returned to Madras in 1920 as the Sub-editor of 'Swadesa
Mitran'. One day when he tried to feed the temple elephant at Tiruvallikkani,
as he used to do, he was lifted up and thrown away. He was admitted in a
hospital. Though he recovered, he continued to suffer ill health and ultimately
succumbed on Sept. 11, 1921.
