Literature is born out of life. As such it can give a true reflection of the culture of its people. Tamil has a long literary tradition. Its literature espouses different aspects of life - broadly categorised by them into two: அகம் and புறம். The social values held by the people and their lofty idealism are reflected in the ancient Tamil literature in both the categories of அகம் and புறம். The philanthropy of the rich, the broad outlook of people on life, the altruist pursuit of fame - are all illustrated in abundance in their literature.
