    Techniques in Editing




    Editing a newspaper or a magazine makes it highly readable and attractive. News gathered from different sources are corrected, reduced by omitting unimportant items and elaborated by adding essential details of the same news. Wholesome news thus arrived at is significant to the success of a paper or magazine. All these are presented in this lesson.

        The five central units deal with the definition of editing, the editor’s responsibilities, classification of manuscripts, print lay-out and the symbols used in editing.

        Editing is defined as making corrected news ready for publication or selection, modification, classification, compiling and finalising different news stories for the newspaper.

        Editors are expected to present the news in a way the readers can easily understand it, It is their function to organise news without deforming it, to avoid confusion if any and to take action for enhancing the respect of the newspaper.

        A sub-editor has to verify the edited news items before sending them to prepare the print lay-out.

        Editors symbols used in journalism are listed in the fifth unit.

        The art of editing, its role in improving the qualities of newspapers, duties, and responsibilities of editors and sub-editors, and editor’s codes used in editing the news, are the topics discussed in this unit.
