    This lesson highlights the various aspects of the writings of Mu. Varadarajanar. The life and writings of Mu.Varadarajanar have been a source of inspiration for several young and aspiring Tamil scholars.

    Mu. Varadarajanar, affectionately called “Mu.Va.” in literary circles, was born in Thirupathur in North Arcot district. He began his career as a school teacher and by virtue of his erudition and writings rose to the position of Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Madurai Kamaraj University. In a brilliant writing career spanning several decades he authored 85 books. He received several accolades and awards for his writings.

    Mu.Va’s contribution to the repertoire of Tamil prose is invaluable. He was a master of many genres. Fiction, Literary Criticism, Letters, Commentaries and Biographies are five major genres in which Mu.Va. made a mark for himself. A study of his writings in these genres shows us his role in shaping Tamil prose. His fiction and letters are noted for their daringly inventive style while his literary criticism brings out the sweetness of the Tamil language. His Commentary on Thirukkural simplified the verses in Thirukkural for the masses. His biographies are noted for their vivid descriptive style. Simplicity, clarity, purity, elegance and sweetness are the 5 chief qualities of Mu.Va’s prose. It is also remarkable for its alliterative effect, striking metaphors and felicity of expression.
