- A02142 Different types of Sentences - part I
A sentence is an expression of an idea. This idea is expressed with the help of a subject, predicate and object. These are nouns, verbs, prepositions etc. That is to say that the parts of speech help to express an idea. The parts of speech in Tamil, as you know, are Peyarchol, Venaichol, Idaichol, and Urichol.
In Tamil, one of these may serve its purpose without being present explicitly. Such syntax is called Thokainilaith Thodar. It is of six kinds. They are:
Vettumaith Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of case marker) Vinaith Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of the tense marker)
Panbuth Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of the word linking the noun with its adjective or quality)
Uvamaith Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of the link that indicates a comparison or a simile)
Ummaith Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of conjunction that is the link that connects two words) and lastly Anmozhith Thokainilaith Thodar (absence of words
needed for revealing the full meaning of an expressional)
The last one, namely Anmozhith Thokainilaith Thodar is not a separate category by itsea0214lf. It is based on the five categories mentioned earlier. These five lack or conceal something and yet are fully expressive. But the Anmozhith Thokainilaith Thodar brings out the concealed word and also supplies an extra meaning. For example, Poonguzhal can be expanded into Poovai udaiya kuzhalaik kondavall. This means: The girl with the hair adorned with flower. Here we find the expansion of the accusative case and also the indication of the person. So this is called Vettumaith Thokaip Purathup Pirantha Anmozhith Thokai. That is Anmozhith Thokai based on Vinaith Thokai Nilaith Thodar. Similary we have Anmozhith Thokai based on other four Thokainilaith Thodarkall.
These phrases or expressions are composed of two words but function, seemingly, as one word. That is one word with two parts. On this basis, such expressions are divided into four types.
This lesson deals in detail with the Thokainilaith Thodar and its kinds.
