This lesson tells you all about the growth of the various media and their influence on society. You can also study the role of language in expressing the information which the media conveys and the extent of their success.
The growth of mass media today, is astonishing. Newspapers, weeklies, monthlies, the radio, television, cinema, internet and so on, are now engaged in disseminating information to the people. There are two major types of media -- the Print Media and the Electronic Media.
The information that these media convey to the people is manifold. Politics, Literature, Sports, Philosphy, Religion and Social problems -- all these are handled by the media in a thought-provoking manner. To do this effectively, they should handle language carefully and skillfully. If the message sent by the media is not clear, people will cut off their connection with the particular medium.
Tamil journals were first used by Christian missionaries to propagate religious ideas. In 1831, the Chennai Christian Association published a monthly journal called “ Tamizh pathirikai”. In 1882, “Swadesamithran” appeared, followed by Bharathi’s “India”. “Vijaya”, “Karmayogi” and “Chakravarthini”.
It was Si.Pa.Aditthanaar who declared that it is only the spoken Tamil which is in vogue today, which is ‘alive’. Tamil should neigher be vulgar nor obscure. Since the radio is a purely ‘audio’ medium, the language used should be clear and effective. Television news-readers use Standard Common Tamil, as it should be understood by viewers belonging to all the districts.
In the history of cinema, although historical films used pure, literary Tamil, it was simple and clear and therefore easily understandable. Hence, people watched such films with interest.
Thus, this lesson gives you plenty of information about mass media, their growth and role in society.முன்
