words treated in the 11th section of Nika--u-c‡-ƒma-i. There is, however, one feature which is noteworthy: each meaning of a homonym is further explained by means of another word.

In the meantime, the  American Mission was Pursuing  its plan with up-dated interest. The Rev.Samuel Hutchings worked on the larger English - Tamil Dictionary. This work was published by the  Rev. M. Winslow in 1842 and was revised by the Rev. L. Spaulding in 1852.

    ROTTLER'S TAMIL-ENGLISH DICTIONARY

A little earlier, i.e., about 1830, a Tamil-English Dictionary in four parts was prepared Dr. J, P, Rottler. To revise this dictionary, the Government of Madras first part was printed at Vepery in 1834 and was dedicated to Lord William Bentinck (Governor-General : 1828-1835). The author died while the second part was passing though the press. The editorship then devolved upon the Rev. W. Taylor and Mr.T. Venka-ƒchala Mudaliyar, a certified teacher of the college at Madras, was associated with him in the work of revision and completion. part II was published in 1836-37. Parts III and IV were revised by the Rev.  W. Tayior and Mr. T. Venka-ƒchala  Mudaliyar and were published respectively in 1839 and 1841. The complete dictionary formed a quarto volume of 1425 pages. The words and their meanings were largely drawn from  Catur-akarƒti. Beschi's manuscript dictionary of the common dialect and another manuscript dictionary, Tamil-English Dictionary, seem to have been made use of. 'Though very valuable, this dictionary is too limited in its vocabulary and deficient in astrological, mythological and scientific terms. It dose not include much that is in good use in Ceylon.'1

    WINSLOW'S TAMIL AND ENGLISH DICTIONARY

Sometime after the publication of Dr. Rottler's Dictionary, the material collected for the larger Tamil-English Lexicon by the Rev. J. Knight and M. Tissera and added to by the Rev. P. Percival, the Rev. L.Spaulding and the Rev. S.Hutchings, were edited by the Rev. M. Winslow at Mardas (assisted by the Rev. P. Percivalfor a short time) and published in july 1862 The Tamil Pandas who assisted in the publication were Messrs. Ramƒnuja Kavirƒyar, išƒkapperumƒ˜ Aiyar, Virƒsƒmi  Chettiyar, ƒtim‡lam Mudaliyar and Abraham Alliene, another Indian scholar.

This comprehensive in July 1862 The Tamil-English Dictionary aimed at embracing both the common and the poetic dialects of the Tamil language and at including the principal astronomical, astrological, mythological, botanical, scientific and official terms, as well as the names of many authors, poets, heroes and gods. It comprised many more words than any previous Tamil Dictionary; and it contained information on the philosophy, the religion and the customs of the Tamils. The following note at the dictionary gives us an idea of Its vocabulary:
