A02144 Classification of Poetry
This lesson gives us an introduction into the classification of the four different types of “Pa”. These are Venbaa, Aasiriyapaa, Kalipaa, Vanjipaa and a mix of Venbaa and Aasiriyappa is known as Marutpaa. “Pa” inam is a term given to one or two similarities that exist among the different types of “Pa”s. This does not mean that a “Pa” inam needs to possess the grammar of the particular “Pa”. “Pa” is classified into three namely, Thaalisai, Thurai and Virutham.
There are twelve types of “Pa” in all. Vendaalisai, Vendurai, Velivirutham, Aasiriyathaalisai, Aasiriyathurai, Aasiriyavirutham, Kalithaalisai, Kalithurai, Kalivirutham, Vanjithalisai, Vanjithurai and Vanjivirutham. Kural Venbaa is divided into two namely Kural Venn Sendhurai and Kural Thaalisai. Kural Venn Sendhurai is made up of two lines and both lines are equal in size. Kural Thaalisai is also made up of two lines. Velivirutham has three lines as does Vendaalisai. Vendurai has three to seven lines.
Aasirapaa’s inam will be as follows: Aasiriyathaalisai has three lines. Aasiriyathurai has four lines and the last line is shorter than other lines. So also Aasiriya Virutham has its own restrictions.
Kalithaalisai has two lines or more. Kalithurai and Kalivirutham have four lines. Kalipa usually consists of a select number of lines. Vanjithaalisai, Vanjithurai and Vanjivirutham, have four lines.
