The Nayak rule was established in Chengi, Madurai and Tanjore. However it was at Madurai that the Nayak rule lasted for the longest period - almost 208 years. Among the Madurai rulers, the most prominent are Viswanatha Nayak, Tirumalai Nayak, Chokkanatha Nayak and Rani Mangammal.
