Saivism - the worship of Siva - is considered the most ancient living faith in the world. It has been in vogue in South India, particularly in Tamilnadu, starting from the pre-Aryan times.In this lesson we make an attempt to trace the history of Saivism, as evidenced in the ancient Tamil literature - The Sangam classics, the Epics and other post-Sangam classics. Though the term ‘Siva’, as such is not to be found in the Sangam classics, references have been identified to mark the presence of Siva temples and also to the attributes characteristic of Siva.
