Writing and Editing News
This lesson tells you about how the news received in the newspaper office is written and edited.
The four units take up the style adopted in journalism, the structure of news, the writing of news and the news editing.
The style of a newspaper should be as simple as that adopted byThiru.Vi. Kalyana Sundaranaar in his Desabakthan, Dina Thanthi the popular Tamil daily attracted even auto-drivers as established by its founder Si.Pa. Adithanaar for its choice of spoken Tamil for news publication.
News has a clear structure with titles such as headline dateline, lead and body of the news. The title or headline can be a banner, a single line headline, two-line headline, a pyramidic pattern shoulder head line or other forms. A by-line called Peyar vari, date line or Naall Vari is printed between the title and the detailed news. It can be of a variety of forms like summary lead, dramatic lead, contrast lead and so on. The body of the news should provide more information than the other parts through its beginning, middle and end.
News writing is a special talent exhibiting simplicity, understandability, brevity, relevance, avoidance of negativity, active voice, known abbreviations and so on.
News editing is modifying the structure of the news of manuscript reports. Editing demands a good number of conditions to be observed.
