    Use of Symbols in Editing




    This lesson is concerned with the development of modern Tamil journalism, classification of news magazines, the status and trend, usual errors and the uses of editorial codes.

        Tamil news publications are classified as newspapers and journals. Based on the volume of sales they are also categorised as major, medium and minor publications.

        Editorial symbols are used in popular newspapers like Dinamani, Dinamlar, Dinathanthi and Dinakaran Appropriate use of the question mark, the exclamation mark, the semicolon, the full-stop, the inverted commas, the quotation marks, and the dash helps the readers’ comprehension and interpretation. They are illustrated in this lesson.

        From this lesson you will be able to understand the difference in the contents of magazines before and after Indian independence, the basis of classification of journals, the trend of investigative journalism, the need for the language errors to be corrected and the nine punctuation marks used as editors’ symbols in quality journals.
