மணி என்பவன் சொல்லிலும், செயலிலும் குறும்புத்தனம் உடையவன். மற்றவர்களைக் கேலிக்குரியவராக ஆக்குவது அவன் விருப்பம். இதனால் சிரிப்பும், சில வேளைகளில் சிக்கலும் உண்டாகின்றன. இதனால் அவனை மக்கள் ஊரை விட்டுத் துரத்துகின்றனர். அவன் காட்டில் ஒரு முனிவரைச் சந்திக்கிறான். அவரிடமும் தன் குறும்புத்தனத்தைக் காட்டுகிறான். முனிவர் அவனை வாழ்த்தி அனுப்புகிறார். மணி ஊர்ப்புறத்தில் உள்ள கோயிலில் தங்குகிறான். அங்கே அந்நாட்டு இளவரசி வருகின்றாள். அவன் இளவரசியிடம் காட்டிய குறும்புத்தனம் அவனை மணக்கும்படி ஆகிறது. இவ்வளவும் மணி கண்ட கனவாகக் கதை முடிகிறது.
