    c01216 பழமொழி நானூறு

This book is mentioned as பழமொழி also. As the name itself suggests, it consists of 400 poems. Each poem carries a proverb. The whole book is divided into 34 chapters, with each chapter having 10 poems, roughly. For, some chapters contain more than 10 poems and some less than 10.

முன்றுறை அரையனார் is the author of the பழமொழி. He was, perhaps, a vassal ruling over the area around முன்றுறை. He belonged to Jainism and lived in the 5th century A.D.

Proverb is a pithy saying which expresses an idea powerfully in a simple language. Proverbs are based on experience, தொல்காப்பியர் names it ‘முதுமொழி’ (an old saying). பழமொழி நானூறு employs Tamil proverbs to explain the codes it introduces.

This book contains 400 poems in வெண்பா metre. The author speaks out his thought in the first part (2 lines) of the poem; then comes the second part which carries a proverb.

We find references to the episodes of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata epics, the stories of the சேர, சோழ and பாண்டிய kings and the வள்ளல்கள் of the Sangam age.

Like any other அறநூல், பழமொழி நானூறு also prescribes the code of conduct. Learning, humility, saving for the future, being generous, gratitude, avoiding the bad company, the responsibilities of a minister and the soldiers, endeavour and friendship are some of the topics discussed in பழமொழி நானூறு.
