The introductory section of this lesson defines the தேவாரம், one kind of lyrical composition in ancient Tamil classical music. The தேவாரம் were devotional songs sung in praise of Lord Siva. The three சைவ நாயன்மார் or Saints - ஞானசம்பந்தர், திருநாவுக்கரசர் and சுந்தரமூர்த்தி were the exponents of the தேவாரம். தேவாரம் is the collective name of the compositions of these three saints.
A unit of 10 தேவாரப்பாடல் was called a பதிகம். The three Saiva Saints composed several thousand பதிகம் which besides glorifying Lord Siva also laid down the ethics of Saivism. The ஓதுவார்கள் or singers of the தேவாரம் sing the songs as per the tradition of yore. Their music is called தேவாரப் பண்ணிசை.
