The Saiva Saints ஞானசம்பந்தர் and திருநாவுக்கரசர் were contemporaries and belonged to the 7th c.A.D. while சுந்தரர் lived in the 8th c.A.D. The three were preceded by another great Saiva Saint காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் of the 5th c.A.D. who paved the way for the popularisation of the பண்ணிசை with her devotional songs called மூத்த திருப்பதிகங்கள்.
சம்பந்தர், நாவுக்கரசர் and சுந்தரர் are presented as men divinely ordained to create their compositions which are today revered as the தமிழ் வேதம். The statues of the three Saints are found in all Siva temples in Tamil Nadu and குரு பூசை is performed on the days of their union with Siva.
